From writing for The Daily Mississippian or reporting for NewsWatch and Rebel Radio, to selling advertising, the School of Journalism and New Media gives students real-world experiences to succeed in an ever-changing media industry. With your support, our students can grow and flourish from even more educational opportunities.
Today, you can invest in scholarships, student experiences and internships, faculty support, and the expansion of Farley Hall and the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics.
The School of Journalism and New Media’s enrollment increased 5.6 percent (1,557 students to 1,644 students) from the 2017-2018 academic year to 2018-2019, with the Integrated Marketing Communications degree accounting for much of this growth. As a comparison, 2010 enrollment stood at 445. Among our innovative programs:
- We offer learning experiences, including those on the international stage, to help student develop into professionals who can excel in a global marketplace. In January, students and faculty traveled to Puerto Rico to conduct in-depth reporting on island residents impacted by Hurricane Maria.
- We are preparing students to write in-depth investigative reports, produce documentary work, and create integrated marketing communications campaigns and more.
- Students Abbie McIntosh and Ariel Cobbert won 2018-2019 Hearst Journalism Awards after competing with their peers from across the nation. Students Matthew Hendley and Madison Scarpino recently captured first-place awards in Southeast Journalism competitions. An assistant dean and 21 students earned 21 awards at the Southeast Journalism Conference. And these are just a sampling of the constant accolades our talented students receive.
